Studies on ticks and tick-borne diseases

The Animal Parasitology group develops research projects, epidemiological studies and advice on ticks and transmitted diseases, as well as other arthropods of health interest.

It is a multidisciplinary group that has been collaborating with staff from various institutions for more than 25 years in studies on ixodoid ticks.

The group carries out epidemiological studies and provides assessment in field sampling on ticks and transmitted diseases to livestock farms and zoos, other research groups, companies and local, regional and national administrations.

We carry out studies on:

  • Resistance to acaricides and search for new acaricide products.
  • Competence and vectorial capacity tests.
  • Design and evaluation of tick control protocols.
  • Monitoring of Ixodidae ticks in vegetation and in various animal species, both domestic and wild.
  • We issue epidemiological reports on health risk.

  • Assessment

Frequent questions

How do I know if I have a tick problem?

If you are reading this text you probably have a tick problem. Ask us.

What can I do to control them?

There are many ways to act, but each one must be applied in the right place and at the right time. Generally, several measures must be applied simultaneously. Do not generalise or act before you know which species you need to control.

How long does it take to control a tick infestation?

It depends on each situation, but in all cases we cannot foresee a short-term solution as the diagnosis of the situation can take a long time, from several months to a year.
