Plant Genetic Resources Centre (CRF)

Plant genetic resources are essential for future global food security. The CRF is the center of INIA that has a legal mandate to conserve, coordinate activities and facilitate the use of all resources held in the banks of the Plant Genetic Resources National Program Network.

Noticia

The CRF is key to the conservation of agrobiodiversity, its study and documentation. This agrobiodiversity includes traditional landraces donated by farmers, crop wild relatives, breeding materials and existing and obsolete commercial varieties, with the potential to be used both as base materials for obtaining new varieties and for the recovery and cultivation of native varieties. All this diversity is available to public and private sector researchers, breeders and farmers.

To fulfill this legal mandate, the CRF conserves, studies and documents the seed collections maintained in its own facilities and the security seed collection of all species of the Collection Network of the Plant Genetic Resources National Program, publishes the National Inventory, that includes passport data information and characterization data of more than 75,000 accessions, and coordinates the activities of this Network. Its lines of research include activities related to the search and collection of new materials, the optimization of regeneration and multiplication protocols, the morpho-agronomic and molecular characterization of cereal and legume collections and applied aspects of physiology and seed pathology.

Research

  • Research drives on the improvement of the utilization of collections of cereals, grain legumes and industrial crop collections conserved at the CRF: characterization, evaluation, phenotyping and genotyping, as well as rationalization of collections.
  • Applied research in seeds physiology to allow the continuous improvement of the CRF conservation procedures used for orthodox seeds collections.
  • Improving the security of the base collection that includes duplicates of the accessions of the National Programme for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PNRF) collections conserved by seeds
  • Improving the applicability of the documentation systems and the on line publication of the National Inventory of Spanish Network of Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
  • Prospection and collection of endangered landraces and crop wild relatives, assisted with eco-geographical tools and information

Instalations

The CRF is located on the farm La Canaleja, in the city of Alcalá de HenaresMadrid, over a terrace on the right bank of Henares river. The facilities as genebank includes seeds conditioning labs, desiccation chambers, climatic and germination chambers, conservation freezing rooms at -4ºC and -18ºC and labs for seeds physiology, and morphological and molecular phenotyping.

To carry out the multiplication, regeneration and characterization of the collections, a farm of 100 ha is available with infrastructure and machinery for field trials under dry and irrigation conditions, glass greenhouses and tunnels for cultivation. These facilities are available for running INIA research projects.
