​Application of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) in cattle

​The group of Assisted Reproduction and Preimplantation Embryology in bovine has an extensive experience using assisted reproduction technologies (ARTs: Estrus synchronization, artificial insemination, Ovum Pick Up, cryopreservation and transfer of embryos produced in vitro and in vivo) to improve reproductive efficiency in cattle.

Biotechnology of reproduction is a fundamental tool providing to beef and dairy cattle producers new technologies to improve the competitiveness and efficiency of their farms. Assisted reproduction technologies (ARTs) combined with genetic selection programs allow the adaptation of the farms to new challenges such as climate change, population increase, loss of biodiversity or changes in the eating habits of society through selection and raising animals that are more resistant to heat stress and various diseases and with higher production and better quality products (meat and milk).

Our research group is an interdisciplinary and multi-expert group that has a remarkable experience in the use of different ARTs such as estrus synchronization treatments, artificial insemination, embryo production using in vitro and in vivo techniques and embryo transfer.



  • Implementation of artificial insemination programs by using estrus and ovulation synchronization treatments. These programs ensure better planning of the calving season and the increase of progeny genetic value.
  • In vivo embryo production by superovulation and non-surgical uterine flushing. This technique allows the recovery of embryos from high genetic merit donors or endangered breeds.
  • In vitro embryo production from ovaries recovered post-mortem or by OPU. This technique increases the number of offsprings from domestic animals as well as wild species. Also, it is useful in embryo conservation programs.
  • Cryopreservation and embryo transfer. In vivo and in vitro produced embryos could be cryopreserved and/or transferred to synchronized recipient.
